On a warm summer day in Tokyo, he observed a small, glowing black dot on the road, where a car had just stopped moments before. It was a mixture of oil and water that had seeped under the vehicle and created a shiny, slippery area on the asphalt. For the first decade after World War II, Mr. Ukomori was painfully aware of Japan's precious and limited natural resources. He was even aware of the safety hazards such slippery stains could cause to others. And then there was the question of helping rebuild a new Japan, making a contribution that was greater than his own personal needs and interests, and that served his country.
